Who is Bonsai Portsmouth?
We are a small but mighty team of at least two, with lots of help from friends and family. When I came to look at what is now Bonsai Portsmouth, I had no idea about Fred or his seemingly endless experience with bonsai, and I sure wasn't expecting it to be right here in Portsmouth! Unbeknownst to me, Fred has been mastering his craft here for over half a century! When he was "interviewing" me, trying to decide if I was worthy of the keys to the castle so to speak, I told him that I wholeheartedly believed "this business" would need two things to be successful. Number one, whoever is crazy enough to pursue it would truly have to love it, because it is A LOT of work (that's just the tree's), and secondly, I said, "you, Fred," "we need you." Even if he didn't want to, I knew there would be no way he could stay away.
Everything we have done, we have done together. The logo? My concept, his tree. Yes, our logo is an actual picture of one of his specimen trees! The name? We also came up with that together and it's a pretty funny story, so when you come visit ask me and I will let you know. You will also have to tell me to stop talking because once I get going about bonsai, I can't stop. I guess that leads me to the other founding member of Bonsai Portsmouth, Kyle. Bonsai started as a small hobby for me, grew to an incredible passion, and now, as Fred and I like to call it, it's "a lifestyle." I fell in love with this art almost a decade ago and not only has it taught me a lot of important lessons but also has brought me tremendous joy in ways I wouldn't have imagined. I wanted to start Bonsai Portsmouth to make bonsai more accessible, more friendly, and less scary. If you are new to bonsai or an avid collector, we want you to feel welcome here and most importantly we want you to be happy when you leave.
